Anime Nation news links to this post on a Japanese BBS as their source for this bit of news.

Yeah, I saw the BBS post. The thing is... who is this person and what is this board? I'm not doubting him or anything, I just don't like to make announcements based on hearsay alone. Japan has bearers of false information too. ^_^*

The rumor is making the rounds - according to Ear-Tweak, at this point, it is only that - a rumor. The Adult Swim boards are going nuts. Here's hoping that it is NOT confirmed!

Oh, totally, I never intended this to be like, final proof. I mostly mentioned it because it seems to be the source of the rumour. I figured it was just some random person on some random board -didn't even look like there were any links to anything more official. But I don't actually read that much Japanese, so I thought I'd share and let you decide whether it was actually meaningful or not. =)
Hrrmm... Maybe I shoulda said that earlier? ;P

Well, now Anime News had amended that item to say that this should have been reported as a 'rumor' and they apologize that reporting was done before official confirmation was received...
Isn't it nice to have a 'rumor' thread to dump this in?

Isn't it nice to have a 'rumor' thread to dump this in? ^_^ This is exactly the sort of thing I created this thread for. And speaking of the series ending announcement, quoting the Inu Info Master over at IIFJ: Q. Is it true that Sunrise announces end of Inuyasha anime this september?
A. No. This message was anonymously posted to the Japanese BBS on the 19th of April. According to the message, the person who posted the message went to the SUNRISE's information session for job seekers held this day, he or she heard this information from SUNRISE's recruiters and animators. Indeed it is confirmed that the information session was held this day, but the webmaster and many other people have questioned the credibility of the situation because it is hardly possible that the recruiters said the confidential matters to the loose-tongued job seekers. Additionally, the movie 4 was officially announced to come out this December, which generally means that the TV station and its producer decided to air the anime until at least March of 2005 because lineups of Japanese prime-time programs are changed every half year, that is, in October and in April. And even though IIFJ is just a fansite like myself... this guy is dang reliable. He's probably the only fansite I'll even consider believing without anything to back it up.

Just to let you know, the Ear-Tweak webmaster has a similar reassuring post up - not as detailed as IIFJ, but still pretty reliable. She posted the message sometime last night.
Lest I forget - she has an adorable new Miroku/Sango picture on the main page... it's real cute!

Sigh... and now my prime news source, Ryuuteki Rakuen, has gotten into this. Ryu-raku is still a fansite, but it's the first I've seen this brought up on a Japanese site outside of the initial BBS post, so let's see what Nonmi has to say... Inuyasha TV Series September Ending Notice
Hello, this is the webmaster. Lately, there's been a rumor about "the Inuyasha anime is ending in September" that I think a lot of people have heard about, but... there has been confirmation. I regret to inform you that this information is accurate, as episode number calculations have it ending sometime in September. The rumor first started spreading around the internet by a person who went to a Sunrise information session. And we've had god knows how many "ending" rumors up until now... It was about... February of this year. While gathering information, I'd been putting together my own personal opinion of when the "end" would be, but this time it's business, and I'm waiting for confirmation from my multiple connections. "Confirmantion" is certainly the root of the problem, and I regret to say that there's been no mistake. The exact form of the end has not been decided upon yet, but there will be no more anime originals from here on out. The anime is heading towards the end. .... There may still be some loose ends, so let's cheer them on!
Furthermore, due to personal reasons I cannot divulge the source of this information. I also cannot answer any questions regarding the final episodes. Please understand this. m(___)m "Ryuuteki Rakuen" webmaster, Nonmi...... I'm still not saying anything until something official comes up. If that means I'm a couple months late with the announcement if it turns out to be true... OH WELL. I wanna be sure I get it right and not cause any undue rioting! In the meantime... well, here it is.

Okay - now my heart is racing again. I have to ask though - if she can't confirm or divulge where the information is coming from, doesn't that kind of make you question the reliability? (I'm not dissing her, just means that the 'source' may not be good.)
On a related note - if the rumor IS true, when would Sunrise officially announce it? I thought that their seasons change in April and September...

(I'm not dissing her, just means that the 'source' may not be good.) Well, Nonmi and the Nameless IIFJ Webmaster are my two "suck ups" when it comes to fansite information. I tend to believe them, even if they don't quote a source. Granted I don't say anything on the main site unless I have an official source, but that doesn't stop me from believing them. If Sunrise was going to say something, there MIGHT be a blurb on the monthly site update on May 10th. Other than that... I don't know.

Gah, looks like both IIFJ and you also got word of this about the same time I did. This will be very interesting, though... if the manga and anime start to draw to a close around the same time, I'm actually going to be very, VERY excited. In a sad sort of way... I'm going to miss it. But still. I'm waiting for that official comfirmation, as well.

I hope that both of your suspicions are NOT confirmed, but I guess we just have to wait and see... New rumor (hopefully to be confirmed soon) is that Viz will be releasing the 1st movie in the summer and the 2nd movie in the fall. Both will be released on DVD - not in theaters. The information is from www.animenation.com. Maybe if the DVDs do well here, Sunrise would re-think ending the series?

I don't get that magazine, so I don't know for sure, but... it sounds legit. If someone can leaf through an Animerica and confirm this, I'll be happy to put it up.

So, assuming Inuyasha were to go uninterupted in it's run until September, then it'd end with about 170 episodes.

So, assuming Inuyasha were to go uninterupted in it's run until September, then it'd end with about 170 episodes. On the upside, we'll likely get, at most, one week of break between now and September, so the show should run steady through then (the first year had no breaks between April and September, the second year had one week at the end of April, and the third year had one week in July). So, yes, the show would run approximately 170 episodes, and, at the current rate, would be able to tell the story up to chapter 365-ish of the manga. So, unless the manga's ending with the next tankobon (and thus at chapter 368), the end of the series might get cut short. In other news, Nonmi's site strangely went down. Good thing I swiped her little announcement ahead of time. In other conspiracy-sounding events, Nonmi and her prime news fodder source, Leon, were having a really long discussion about the series ending announcement on her BBS, but once she made the announcement on the main page, the BBS went down for a day, and when it came back, the thread in question had disappeared... ::cue Twilight Zone music::
