Thanks. I'm always curious about the timeframe of a story. What happened when, how long it took, etc. Like in this story; it takes place 500 years before "InuYasha." I don't know anything about this era. When exactly was it? And what WAS going on in Japan at the time? Do you know of any sites that have info about it? I really appreciate your time, and all the effort that goes into all this. If we're assuming that the main Inuyasha storyline is a literal 500 years in the past from Kagome's present era, then it takes place around 1497. However, due to the use of firearms in the Shichinintai arc, the earliest time it could take place is 1543, as that was when Japan made contact with the Portuguese. Also, Oda Nobunaga is mentioned, and he wasn't born until 1534, and considering he was still called "The Fool of Owari" in the episode, it meant that at that point he was still a child or teenager, meaning that the main Inuyasha storyline has to take place between 1543 and 1550 or so. So, with that as a starting point, going back another 500 years puts us in the year 1050 or so, which is right in the middle of the Heian era (794-1185).

Thanks for the info! Considering the upheavals around that time, it's easy to see how demons could cause alot of problems; and something like the Shikon no Tama could be created. And that the rest of the world was obviously rather busy, it's a wonder that anybody had any time for "cultural" stuff!

Oh Boy! Priests in front of you, Youkai behind you! Take about stuck between a rock and a hard place! Do the Kami watch over "good" youkai?
Another question about "breeding." (heehee!) If your father was a dog youkai, and your mother is just a dog (no insult intended), doesn't that make you a half-youkai? So you must heve been born with "power" from you father, and trained it as you grew up. He must have very powerful, if you became so powerful.
Also, does that make you hanyou, or is hanyou half youkai and half human?
I noticed in "InuYasha" that even though youkai looked down on hanyou, the few in the story seem to be stronger than alot of youkai ( or maybe "common" youkai). In fact, InuYasha seems much stronger than alot of "powerful" youkai, even before he receives Tessaiga. And Shirori is able to "defeat" her own grandfather.
Ok, enough! Thanks for letting me talk your ear off! Being snowed in, unable to GET OUT, makes me antsy. Happy Holidays to You!

Wasn't "hanyou" defined as half-demon? It didn't say what the other half was, I think.
Oh man, does Sesshomaru know he's only three-quarters demon?
I noticed the same thing about half-demons. It's hilarious that half-human seems to mean "weak" in full-blood demon speak, yet Inuyasha regularly hands pure-bloods their rear ends (including Sesshomaru).

Yeah, "hanyou" is literally "half youkai", and doesn't really imply what the other half needs to be.

Thanks for the info guys. I always wondered, but as far as I could see, InuYasha, Jinenji, and Shiori, the only ones I know about, are all half human.

Wooow. I totally just had a dumb moment. I've been pondering over why "I'm-a-demon-slayer-with-an-obvious-overcompensation-problem" guy has been so interested in the jewel even after he knew it almost lead to his death...and then I remembered that it came from his village...which would...you know...make him interested in it even after he knew what it did to him T.T.

Well not a bit of a question, its a whole question and its about the two lion statues in chapter ten. I actually have two sets of those around my house (which meant that I knew what was missing from the under the one statues paw a head of time ^^!...Its the small victories in life, right?...;.; right? /loser) but I've never really known if they meant anything in particular. I mean it would make sense to me if it was a male and female pairing....but whats with the 'male' having his paw on a sphere? Are they supposed to guard things, or is it like the color red at the new year and they're supposed to bring in luck and good fortune?

Generally, I've been writing under the assumption that the majority of my readership is unfamiliar with the statues, since knowing what they are ahead of time kinda gives away some of the plot. ^_^* Anyway, I think the sphere/jewel on the one is supposed to symbolize power, while the cub on the other symbolizes protection. Or in the case of my story specifically, he has his paw on a jewel because he's... guarding a jewel. ^_^*

Nothing of the plot was really ruined other than I guessed that the reason why the spirit paused for a moment to consider your question was because it was missing its own child. Anyway like I said; I just happened to have two pairs of them in my house for a few...well actually for as long as I can remember. My papa used to practice the Tiger and Crane forms of Kung-fu as well as actually joining his school when they all participated in the Chinese New Year's parades in NYC's China town (he was even the butt end of the school's lion a few times.)...anyway back to my point, what I was getting to was that I've had a bit more exposure to eastern-asian culture than your normal white American. :] Also I totally digg your reason for his paw being on the 'jewel'! And...I totally didn't make that connection in my head x.x. I'mmmm dumb.

Ah, hahahahahaha! I KNEW IT! But! did the other still have a "cub" under it's paw? That is an interesting speculation!
As for the jewel, an interesting deduction. How long after Midoriko's battle with the demons would this have been? (Here I go again!)

How long after Midoriko's battle with the demons would this have been? (Here I go again!) This story takes place about a hundred years after the jewel was created, and it's been sealed away the majority of that time. Part of the purpose of this story is to answer that annoying question of "If the jewel's been around so long, and is so sought after, why had no one utilized its power until Naraku?" No real timeframe for Midoriko's era was given in the manga other than "hundreds of years ago", so I just picked something useful for my purposes. ^_^* Plus I get to thumb my nose at the anime's random Midoriko-Kirara connection, since that would make Kirara older than me. Even though the manga implies in the ghost-cat story that Kirara isn't very old (in youkai terms, at least).

Oooo....! Puppy fluffyness! Heehee! Also, another mystery! Who ARE These People? Why is the jewel showing up NOW?? Where is your Mother? ? And you are going to have to start practicing on your disguises! Ha! As for the "lion," I believe they are "Shishi," the lion-dogs that are supposed to guard sacred places and things. See inuyashagoya.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=manga&action=display&thread=142 about halfway down the page we discuss them. So they would be powerful beings.

Sometimes I worry I'm adding too many unknowns at once before answering any of the previous questions the story brings up. I just don't plan very far ahead in too much detail, so am unsure as to when in the story it's a good idea to drop information without the potential of spoiling too much else, but I don't want to leave it all to the "climax" and just have a torrent of information all come out at once.
