Well, you can't be too well off either. Probably much better off than Akagane, but whenever you go into your dog form... heh, well.. fur + can't sweat + intense exercise = dead puppy. xD

Awwww...., a Cupid on four paws! ;D
Why don't you suggest that Akagane become a demon slayer full time. I'll bet there would be alot of people who would pay well to have a nuisancy demon slain.
Good for Kagane! To try and overcome her fear, for the sake of her brother's happiness. I hope things work out for them.
Three cheers for fluffyness! Heeheehee.......

Because he doesn't slay youkai for profit. He didn't go out into the world for the sake of slaying random youkai, there was one specific one he was hunting down. He just took odd jobs along the way to keep himself sharp and only asked for money to cover his own travel expenses. Asking people to cough up a small fortune in return for their own safety is pretty much extortion. He could conceivably become a slayer full-time if it was only himself he needed to financially support, but he's got a big debt to the village to pay off since his work comprised such a high percentage of the village's total earnings, and when he left their work pool, it left a serious void.

Aww, ol' stick-in-the-mud's become so much more...tractable by now. It's actually sweet. (Mostly just popping in to show I'm not dead, and I'm still eating up the story--although I'll be sad when Akagane's not a main player anymore. That guy really grew on me. )

Oh I don't know. I would think of it more as along the lines of running a pest control business. People will pay you to get rid of the (not so) little nasties making a mess of their homes, eating their food, spreading disease around, etc, etc. I can understand the debt, and a debt always needs to be repaid. But on the other hand, it seems the village itself has almost all one type of producers (artisans). Do they have any general support (farmers, etc.)? If not, than if the economy should tank, they would be in deep $#!%. Nobody outside is going to want pretty things, when they are looking to buy food themselves. It would pay to diversify, especially with a skill that no one else has, so people would need to come to YOU.

They've got a few vegetable gardens and storage for preserved food, but what they produce themselves isn't enough to sustain them. With Akagane's income, his sword did sell for a high price, but it also cost a lot to make. From what I figure, out of his profit from his sword, a percentage of it went to the general fund pool for the village to buy food and supplies, and the rest went to himself. Of his own share, he likely spent a good chunk of it buying the materials for his next piece, but since that one ended up broken, he never got a return on it. The rest of his earnings dried up over the next few years as he focused on his training and had no actual income to replenish it. The village, on the other hand, just made some bad investments and assumed that the increase in income that he provided would always be there, so bought more expensive tools and materials that, without his contribution, they suddenly couldn't afford. It's like... a husband has a lucrative executive job and a wife has a minimum-wage retail job. The wife's income is livable, but only if she makes a meager living. The two of them decide to take out a mortgage on a nice, big house, under the assumption that the husband's income will be sufficient to pay it off. The wife gets a nice car and jewelry and stuff that she'd never be able to afford on her own income. Then the husband quits his job and decides to go on a humanitarian trip overseas. While the wife doesn't find anything morally objectionable about that, the sudden income void has left her alone with a house and luxuries that she absolutely can't afford on her own, and as the husband is away, their savings start running dry trying to pay it all off. So now, as a last resort, the wife is forced to start selling off her most valuable posessions to make ends meet. Should the husband then tell the refugees he's helping to cough up money for his help so he can send it home to his wife?

Awww... the end of that chapter was so cute, and the chapter illustration really did it for me. Though, come to think of it, there were two chapter illustrations. Yay! I think Kogane would make a good doctor. ^_^ Also, loved the scene with the noble guy (I can't remember his name). Akagane should keep his mind out of the gutter.

Heh. Akagane missed a strike of his hammer - that paragraph was so funny.

Heh. Akagane missed a strike of his hammer - that paragraph was so funny. Actually, when I originally wrote the chapter, the entire sword-crafting took all of two paragraphs. The chapter was already running insanely long and I was rushing by the end, but my proofreader told me that the sword-making was too personal to just skim over with just a "and then he made a sword" kind of description. Plus I'd already wanted to pull Hisui back into the chapter before the end, too, in order to give her more of a chance to react to everything that had happened and give some more implications as to where all the relationships are headed. Though I was kind of afraid people would hate me for leaving the Akagane/Hisui relationship more or less still up in the air. I know that some people were making a lot of noise at the end of the manga that Inuyasha and Kagome didn't kiss, and now here I leave the Akagane/Hisui relationship with them barely even having touched. So I don't know if people think I should have gone farther with them or if their predominantly chaste interactions are enough. I know I personally have a wild imagination when brainstorming things for those two to do, but when it comes down to actually writing it out, I just feel like they're not ready for that kind of thing yet. They may be physically mature, but given that he's been utterly distracted with other things since he was 12 years old, he probably hasn't had any chance to mature emotionally. Though then that leaves me with the problem that, given that we're not going to be seeing them for a while, a lot of that maturing is going to have to happen "behind the scenes", and I don't know if people are okay with that.

Awww..., poor little Wan-Chan! Is the puppy feeling picked on? Teehee!
What a wonderful gift! Considering the eagerness of the aristocrat to get his hands on an Akagane sword, I suspect it will be a weapon of great usefulness in the future. I hope you remember the training that Akagane gave you!
So where will you go now?

I think your proof-reader gave good advice. Personally, I think you've handled the Akagane/Hisui relationship just right and should keep trusting your instincts on this matter.

A bit of warning before I post this... So, we were talking and stuff... and the topic turned to crack yaoi pairings... and if there were any in the Memoirs. I was tempted to say "no" given that there's only one adult male character in them so far, but... I'm an adult. Eventually. So if you mess with the timeline a bit and stuff, you get... well... this. >_< (WARNING: It's hidden behind a link for a reason. It's not explicit, but it's still, er, rather "erotic", so please beware). It's total crack and I'm utterly ashamed of drawing it since I don't consider it a valid pairing at all, but... I was kinda proud of how it turned out artistically, and since it's there, well... might as well share. ^_^*
