Yes, I watch .Hack/Sign - and it's nice to see that someone else is from Canada. All I ever hear about is the Adult Swim on Cartoon! So...did you have a question about .Hack/Sign or is it just general curiousity?

No problem! Part of the reason this series is rather confusing is because it is part of a much larger phenomenon including games, special series &c. all of which tell the overall story of "The World." "The World" is, basically, a game. Players assume character identities with magical or sword-swinging abilities of various kinds. There is no obvious object in the in the game, but players can move around the various places. The Crimson Knights (led by the Silver Knight) are system moderators. They "patrol" the World to ensure everything runs smoothly. They seem to be under the direction of Lady Subaru, who spends most of her time in the water city. She is a player, like everyone else, but evidently spends much more time online than other players like Mimiru, Bear and BT (reasons for this are revealed later). Right. So - enter Tsukasa. Unlike everyone else, Tsukasa cannot log out. He is permanently stuck in the World with his odd looking "guardian" which looks like a giant golden dumbbell (which has powers that can effect people in the real world), and a mysterious cat character named Maha. Maha guides him to a secret place within the world where a child is...sleeping, let's say. So - what does it all mean? Good Question!! The story of The World is divided into two parts: before and after the Awakening of the strange child encountered by Tsukasa. But why is Tsukasa stuck in the World in the first place? Not sure. The general theory is that he is in some sort of coma. The various sinister properties of this online, interactive, artificial reality game are explored in VOAs (if that's the right term) &c that are part of the "Project Hack" universe and take place AFTER the events of .Hack/sign. In a way, .Hack/sign is the prequel. That's the short version of what's going on. Hope it helps! There are a few websites, not all of which are helpful. If you like, I can find a decent one and post the address.
